Since rabies is a medical emergency, the schedule is calculated based on the day of the first dose administrated. The schedule is based on widely accepted medical guidelines from organizations like the CDC and WHO.

The schedule for a person who has NEVER been vaccinated against rabies follows a 4-dose D0 > D3 > D7 > D28 regimen in India

On Day 0, Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) is also administered along with the first vaccine dose for Category 3 bite .

RIG provides immediate, short-term protection, while the vaccine prompts the body to create long-term antibodies. RIG is not given to previously vaccinated individuals.

If a person has documentation of a prior complete rabies vaccination series, the re-vaccination PEP regimen is simple
