Block Integrated Healthcare Unit (BIHU) is essentially a population-based, decentralized health and child development & nutrition management system at the block level. The goal is to bring all existing programs, workers, facilities, and beneficiaries under one coordinated framework rather than creating a parallel system
BIHU : One Block, One Health Platform for INDIA
BIHU will be a flagship unified system that will integrate healthcare, nutrition, maternal and child services, adolescent health; will work for disease prevention and tracking social determinants of health for every residents within a block.
BIHU : Core Objectives of the Programme
- Improve maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health outcomes.
- Eliminate fragmentation between departments.
- Ensure continuity of care from pregnancy to early childhood.
- Create a real-time block level health and nutrition database
- Strengthen preventive and promotive healthcare for CHRONIC DISEASES
- Improve accountability at every level
BIHU stakeholders
ASHA , ICDS , SUBCENTRE , PHC , BPHC , Panchayat and Block. BIHU’s core value proposition will be convergence — ASHA and Anganwadi Worker currently track the same pregnant woman and same child in separate registers, separate apps (RCH portal, Poshan Tracker, ANMOL, eSamvad), with no shared view.
How BIHU will be executed ?
BIHU (Block Integrated Healthcare Unit) will work as three layers operating together :
Governance Layer — makes decisions
Service Delivery Layer — provides care
Digital Intelligence Layer — tracks data and aids outcomes driven decisions
If BIHU becomes the single source of integration that both feed into one unified system and pull , that will be a wedge.
We will not create a new department rather integrate already existing systems under one umbrella
